Anon. "Do They Still Live?," The Albury Banner and Wodonga Express (3 September 1937)

An Englishman saw a ... monster on the Losa river, in the Ituri Forest, which is Pygmy country. It was on rocks in the centre of the river. The description is 12 feet long, about 4 feet six inches in height, with a bear-shaped head, a body covered with dark fur with place-colored spots, and a tail 6 feet long with a large tuft at the end.

A party consisting of Messrs. E.A. Veazie, J.M. Spencer and Dr. Squills went out sailing on the yacht Cygnet (formerly Pilot boat No. 2), Captain George Charlesworth yesterday morning and returned about one o'clock P.M. From them our reporter has obtained the following particulars of a remarkable sea monster which was seen by Capt. Charlesworth in a cove on the Peninsula almost opposite this city. After sailing up to the end of the Peninsula and back as far as this cove, the yacht was brought to an anchor and the parting, taking their three shot guns, when off to the sore in the skiff. Besides the cobra grande , there are yet more fabulous animals in the Amazon, such as ... the Janaú or Janahúy, an animal which walks in groups through the forest, like a pack of dogs or small wolves, very dangerous and carnivorous, intoxicating its victims with a strong stench, allowing it to sate its verocity; the Tapira-yauara, meaning tapir-dog in Tupi, a gigantic animal which has the shape of a jaguar with the hooved paws of a tapir, with which it digs into the earth to fell the trees whose branches provide refuge for its enemies, who must flee. Note : The name janaú is used for procyonids such as the kinkajou and olingo.

Several testimonies, absolutely reliable (in particular that of the American Father of the Catholic Mission of Antsalova) mention the existence of an animal of a sort of mauve – or pink – colour, which moves quickly in the trees and which, if one believes the testimonies, could be a vasira (a sort of ferret), perhaps larger than normal. Less reliable, but insistent, testimonies speak of unicorns (?), hairy men hiding in trees (which could be giant lemurs still surviving?) ... As elsewhere in western Madagascar, many say they have seen – or know people who have seen – the famous songomby. It is reportedly a sort of big ass, with a strong jaw and a frightening cry, very aggressive, able, by swirling its tail, to project its very corrosive urine onto its victim, who may try to take refuge up a tree.
